Ever questioned what the heck “normal” really means? π€ Join the club -it’s a normal thing to do! Let’s embark on a journey through the maze of human behaviour and neurotypicality, where ‘normal’ is as elusive as the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
Normal, Schmormal – What’s the Dealio?
Normality is like the secret code of society… or is it? π΅οΈββοΈ
It has always remained a mystery of what’s considered ‘normal’ to me, and why sleeping until noon in some places might raise eyebrows. Unfortunately I have found that a lot of norms have been set by morning people in the fields I have worked in. I guess they did get up first… Yep, if you tend to have a shifted sleep cycle, it doesn’t seem to matter that you do the same amount of work but later in the day. There will always be someone that states that you should really come in earlier because it looks like you’re slacking. It that fair – nope. Spoiler alert: ‘normal’ is just societal expectations playing dress-up.
Neurotypicality vs. Neurodiversity – Brainy Battles!
Meet the brainiacs and celebrate the rainbow of minds! ππ§
Welcome to the world of neurotypicality and its flamboyant cousin, neurodiversity! Neurotypicality refers to individuals whose neurological development and functioning align with what is considered typical or within the expected range. What is neurodiversity? Some recognised forms of neurodiversity include autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette syndrome and complex post traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD). Neurodiversity celebrates and recognises the natural variation in neurological traits and conditions among individuals, promoting the idea that differences in the brain are part of the normal spectrum of human diversity. It’s not about being ‘better’ β it’s just different brain flavours. Embracing our unique neurological palette adds spice to the human experience.
Adapt or Rust: The Spectrum of Behaviour
Adaptive tools vs. rusty wrenches – let’s organize that mental toolbox! π§π§°
There is of course an entire spectrum of behaviour, from adaptive problem-solving to rusty, hindrance-causing tools. But even the seemingly quirkiest of behaviours can be a superpower, just waiting to be unleashed. Consider a person with ADHD. While they may struggle with maintaining focus in traditional classroom settings, their ability to hyperfocus can make them incredibly creative and detail-oriented in tasks that captivate their interest. So, while attention challenges may hinder certain situations, the ability to hyperfocus can be a superpower in tasks that align with their passion and strengths.
Why the Fuss About ‘Normal’?
Imagine a world where ‘normal’ is just a setting on the dryer! ππ
Take a spin through the concept of neurodiversity. It’s not about ignoring the struggles; it’s about celebrating the symphony of diverse brains. Many workplaces are now embracing neurodiversity initiatives, offering flexible work arrangements, quiet spaces, and sensory accommodations to support neurodivergent individuals. This inclusivity in the workplace recognises and values diverse strengths, fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of neurodivergence, can thrive and contribute their unique talents. Modernising to embrace neurodiversity is like adding the perfect seasoning to the melting pot of human existence.
Normal is as normal does, or does it? Embrace the neurodiversity revolution β because it’s not about fitting in but celebrating the kaleidoscope of human minds. After all, who wants a world with just one flavour of ice cream? Neurodiversity is the sprinkles on our sundae, making life a bit more colourful!” π¦π #NeurodiversityRevolution #EmbraceYourBrainiac #NormalIsSoLastSeason
