Imagine navigating a city with no street signs – confusing, right? Understanding data types is like decoding those street signs; it’s the key to comprehending the language of information. If you want to know where you are and where you’re going, in this day and age you need to know your data types. From unraveling scientific mysteries to predicting market trends, data analysis is the GPS of our information age.

Categorical Data: The Fruits of Sorting and Grouping

Categorical data is information that can be divided into distinct groups or categories, like colours or types of fruits. Ever found yourself categorizing fruits without ranking them? (Pineapple pen song, anyone? Not that a pen is a type of fruit…) That’s the charm of categorical data! Nominal data is named in a list but not ranked. Think of nominal data, like different colours in a crayon box – each unique, but no hierarchy. Nominal data is a type of categorical data that represents different categories without any inherent order or ranking, like colours or types of animals.

The other main type of Categorical data is ordinal data. Then there’s ordinal data, akin to ranking your top ice cream flavours; some flavours just can’t help but stand out! Ordinal data is a type of categorical data that signifies categories with a meaningful order or ranking, like education levels or customer satisfaction ratings.

Numerical Data: The Numbers’ Playful Dance

A Tricky Question of Footy Numbers and Dress Sizes

What about scenarios where the data contains a number – surely that data is always numerical, right? Is the number on your footy jersey numerical data? Actually…no. For example, a favourite sports player can have a number proudly displayed on their uniform, but unless it is a ranking…this number effectively functions like a name. Therefore, it is categorical nominal data.

Men’s pant sizes often have the waist circumference in them, women’s sizing tends to be a bit more abstract (and lack decent pockets!) While they have a particular order, say “size 12”, “size 14”, etc. they don’t correspond to any actual 12 or 14 of anything. Therefore, they count as categorical ordinal data.
